Ok so conversely, bad in the dressing room etc is neither more likely to promote bad results?

Just to be clear like

Re: Lacazette
You're going round in circles Alex.

Minimise the bet? No. The way for us to minimise risk is decide who we want and go all out to sign them. This method we employ of putting 10 bids for one position and then signing up who is the most economical option is the best way to maximise risk.

Agreed players can be measured on all sorts of contributions at a club.

>>> Lacazette would have been a brilliant signing for us - on many levels and by whatever criteria you measure value, whayever we paid, £30/£40m would doubtless be worth more now

That, sadly, is utter nonsense. It doesn't fail the first tests of logic. If Lacazette had a career-ending injury on his first appearance he would be worth nothing.

The assumption that players will always deliver the best result possible is absurd.

Re: Lacazette
'best ways to minimise risk is to lower the size of each bet'

Better way still is to not bet at all - you are just not in the game then though

Warped logic and one dimensional

Just to put you right Cras.

This 'great in the dressing room', 'leaders', 'great on the training ground' is a load of PR b*ll*x.
If you are winning it's great, losing bad.

Re: Lacazette
>>> I would guess that every decision made at board level is a gamble as no person can see into the future.

That is absolutely true. So the question is what skills we can bring to bear on those decisions, to minimise the risk as much as possible.

As much as some fans don't like it, one of the best ways to minimise risk is to lower the size of each bet.

'If there were only one beer that may be true, but in our case there are a myriad of beers'

There was not though was there - we did not even end up with a shandy

Well beyond Calleri who is not worth a hand shandy

Re: Lacazette
Players serve various functions when signed

Obviously on pitch, but dressing room, training ground, leadership etc

off field they hugely impact perception as a statement of intent, marketing aid and of course supporter morale

You don't seem to be grasping this V?

Lacazette would have been a brilliant signing for us - on many levels and by whatever criteria you measure value, whayever we paid, £30/£40m would doubtless be worth more now

Re: Lacazette
>>> Something is worth what someone will pay, the thirsty man will always pay the premium but it is worth every penny

We're not in that situation. If there were only one beer that may be true, but in our case there are a myriad of beers that may quench our thirst or may turn out to be an illusion and plenty of other outcomes inbetween. So the worth is just not necessarily clear to us - if it was it would be obvious who to buy. We did not have to buy Carroll or Ayew. We don't have to buy Lacazette.

Don't really understand that Alex.
I would guess that every decision made at board level is a gamble as no person can see into the future.

Agreed. Any evidence of a different picture would be very interesting to see.

Re: Lacazette
>>> Alex, Do you think we will get £20 million value from Ayew? £19 million from Carroll? hindsight is not required for most to see that the answer is no.

Agreed. But we're discussing here what the value of Lacazette might be - we don't have that crystal ball. The club has to make decisions without that information. Whether Carroll or Ayew deliver value or not isn't really the point imo - it's whether it was reasonable to expect that they would. Just as I think Dean Ashton was a very good signing but sadly with hindsight it was not a profitable investment for us - the club couldn't know that in advance.

Alex, so we do not know what they made last season?
Also, would you agree that companies can be creative with their accounting to provide a certain picture?

Re: Lacazette
Alex

No it is not

A thirsty man pays that required for a beer, so if you have 3 top quality goalies buying a fourth is neither likely to have an effect nor present a valued investment

Something is worth what someone will pay, the thirsty man will always pay the premium but it is worth every penny

Re: Lacazette
>>> Alex, please enlighten me and tell me what profit we made last season as you stated it was small?

I think I'm right that the last two profits filed were 3m and 10m. Obviously the accounting of this lags somewhat behind the current situation. Let's put it like this - if West Ham were found to be making a huge profit I think there would be a lot of just criticism of whether they're focussing enough on the footballing side. But there's no evidence of that being the case at this time.

Re: Lacazette
>>> A players value can only be judged by the effect he has on the club

The trouble with that approach is that it is only possible with hindsight. Ie it cannot be used to judge whether a signing is a good decision, only whether it worked out well afterwards - it's entirely results-oriented. It's very easy to work out that Payet was valuable to the club last season. But of course the club didn't know that when considering the signing the previous Summer. There were lots of risks with Payet - a temperamental aging luxury player not obviously suited to the premiership.
